RACE INTO SPACE!

Race into Space! is a new anthology from The Lakes International Comic Art Festival.

It features the work of Martin Cater, Ed Doyle, Craig Fletcher, Naomi D’Silva, Alan Holloway, David Livens, John Maybury, James Newell, Gavin Pollock, and Richard Woods.

I'm in there too with my story "Journey into Space (Interrupted)." Here's a wee preview:

You can read the entire anthology online here.

COLOURING JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED): Pages 1-6

This week I did the flat colouring on pages 5 and 6, then went a step further than I have in the past and added shading throughout the 6 pages.

There's a sequence of rasterising type that locks in aspects of colour, and once that's done, it affects being able to change all the pages the same way.

Using photoshop is a continual learning experience.

Glad to have this one finished and get on with something else next week.

COLOURING JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) pages 1-4

I spent the week colouring Journey into Space (Interrupted) pages 1-4 in photoshop.

Thanks to Norrie Millar for the technical assist on Monday.

Going to add some shading and do pages 5 and 6 next week.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) page 6 inks

All six pages inked.

Have spend some time today thinking about how I'm going to colour them. Started tentatively today, and hit an immediate snag with photoshop.

I'll look into that next week, unless the print run of Mount a Rescue arrives, and I'll start on the publicity, mailing out, and putting on sale online for that instead.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) page 5 inks

One page to go, folks.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) page 4 inks

The influence of 1950s flying saucers is evident.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) page 3 inks

The story is halfway done.

I'm toying with the idea of colouring this comic in shades of blue.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) page 2 inks

I'm borrowing Star Trek set design on this page.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) page 1 inks

Here are the inks for page one.
I'll be adding the text to this one using photoshop later.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED) page 6 pencils

Sixth and final page of the story pencilled today.

It's great to get this stage done, and I am eager to begin inking tomorrow.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED): page 5 pencils

Today's efforts.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED): page 4 pencils

Drawing a classic 1950s style flying saucer today.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED): page 3 pencils

Introducing a new character today.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED): Page 1 pencils

Last night's research got me the answers I needed (thanks, Arthur C. Clarke online forum).

So this morning was spent rewriting and laying out page 1.

This work is on the left of the photo.

On the right are the pencils which were done in the afternoon.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE (INTERRUPTED): Page 2 pencils

Today I've been pencilling page 2 of this story. I have skipped page 1 for now as I had a rethink about it this morning, which requires me to do some research. I'll do that tonight.

The working title for this story has changed since yesterday. It's liable to do so again.

The dimensions I'm drawing this at are standard US comic page size, which is not my usual working method. I therefore had to spend quite a bit of time working on the template for it.

Will move backwards to pencil page 1 tomorrow (assuming my research is successful).
