FRED EGG COMICS BLOG 10th ANNIVERSARY GIVEAWAY

August 2019 marks the tenth anniversary of this blog, which seems ridiculous, but there it is.

It’s been good keeping this going, both as a record of what I’ve been up to, putting out thoughts on comics, and getting in touch with many great comics people.

FRED EGG COMICS REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2018

It's that time again. A wee summary of what I've been up to in comics this year.

In January, I continued my Tay Bridge disaster comic strips with Dundee Shmundee #11.

The character of Fred Egg made his return in a story I did for Copy This #47.

February means Hourly Comic Day 2018, and this year I was awake too many of the 24 hours.

That Comic Smell podcast had its first show of the year wherein we discussed our Christmas swag.

Dundee Shmundee #12.

The twelfth issue of Treehouse Comic appeared, featuring three of my stories; Missile Attack Concorde; TH:12:43; and Unexploded Grenade

In March, I completed my blog featuring single panels from Star Wars comics of the 1970s and 1980s; I Stand with the Hoojibs.

In April, That Comic Smell had two episodes, with topics being Love, and Treehouse Comic.

Dundee Shmundee #13

I put together "My Perfect Comic" for an article over at the ComixFlix website.

Another Dundee Shmundee #14 appeared in May.

In June, the Ink Pot studio in Dundee put out an anthology through Universe Publications, entitled Inkthology.

I did a story for it called Ink Drive, and performed it at a DeeCap launch event.

I wrote a story for Francesca Mancuso to draw called Everything in Moderation, which she ran over at her Dreams Addict website.

Dundee Shmundee #15

I began running my webcomic called Bell Time on a weekly basis at my blog.

In July, That Comic Smell had an on-location episode (in an Edinburgh restaurant) to discuss our Glenrothes Con swag.

Bell Time episodes 2, 3, 4, 5 were uploaded to the blog.

And the Inkthology fun continued with a That Comic Smell podcast featuring Rebecca Horner and Catriona Laird.

In August, That Comic Smell got right up to date with some New Comics Chat.

Bell Time continued with parts 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Dundee Shmundee #16.

I had a nice surprise when looking through a book I was interested in, The Star Wars Phenomenon in Britain. I found I was quoted in there discussing the Al Williamson newspaper strips! It's a good read for UK Star Wars fans of a certain vintage.

That Comic Smell struck again, with episodes on British Comics, and one where we chose Top 3 Creators (with guest Olivia Hicks).

I was pleased to take part in a Beano Comics Record attempt as part of the V&A Dundee opening events.

I wrote an article on my comic book "Wow! Retracted" for the magazine, Comic Scene UK.

Olivia Hicks' Sarararara featured a guest comic by me, entitled, "Number Three's the Charm!"

The latest Big Brown Eyes anthology, "Barriers" had a story by me in, "Minty McAllister: Lady Journalist"

In October, That Comic Smell had a Q&A session, we all brought 2 Recommendations, and we did a tribute episode to Superman.

Bell Time parts 15, 16, 17, 18 went online.

I did a tribute comic to Billy MacKenzie for inclusion in Dead Singers Society #4.

The Graffito exhibition in Thurso had my comics Silently Falling, and the wraparound cover for Berserkotron on display.

After a visit to the Comics Archive at the University of Dundee I did a comic for their anthology "Chronicle"

I did a comic book history of comics in Dundee - called Dundee Comics Comic, which was published by Universe Publications.

I did a guest comic for Penned Guin.

In November, my latest comic book Break the Cake was released.

Bell Time 19, 20, 21, 22 were published online.

I did a few comics for the New Zealand anthology, Funtime Comics #31.

My two page Frankensteins comic appeared in Frankenstein Returns.

That Comic Smell 33 discussed our Favourite Female Characters and featured Alan Henderson.

Throughout December, Bell Time 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 appeared.

That Comic Smell 34: Asterix / Goodbye, Stan Lee, and 35: Christmas Do! both went online.

Next year, I'll be continuing Bell Time and my Tay Bridge Disaster comics, and am planning to publish the former in print. Coming up immediately in January is a strip for the next issue of Copy That!

"The latest release from David Robertson’s Fred Egg Comics sees him continue his art/writing duties although with help from some other artists this time too.

Wow! Retracted is an eclectic mix of stories as we’ve come to expect from David with an equal mix of funny, sombre & thought-provoking all rolled into a series of largely one-page stories.  There are a few longer stories in there too but the whole series has the definite Fred Egg feel to them.

David is joined on art duties for eleven of the stories by Eileen Budd, Marc Cassilli, Zu Dominiak, Damon Herd, Olivia Hicks, Rebecca Horner, Paddy Johnston, Tim Kelly, Neil Paterson, Ludi Price, and Pam Wye.  They all add their own flair to the story they are on and the while the art is simplistic in places it doesn’t detract from the powerful message that’s at the heart of the stories he has created.  In fact, the change of style actually helps bolster the collection as one of David’s best.

There is something for everybody in this but for me every story has it’s own worth – the laugh out loud moments and the reality check moments is a really smart blend of themes to pull off and I can see me re-reading this again soon.  Another Fred Egg success and I look forward to the next book too.

WOW! RETRACTED at OPTICAL SLOTH

"To every comics artist out there who worries endlessly about putting out comics on a regular basis, you could do a lot more than emulating David. The bulk of his stories are short, usually only a few pages long. This lets him submit comics for all kinds of anthologies, and every year or so he has more than enough material to put out a book of his own. See how easy it is? Granted, lots of artists only deal with larger stories, but at least having the ability to work on shorter stories would be a nice change of pace for whenever you get stuck on whatever epic you’re working on. So hey, enough of the life advice, how about this comic? The bulk of these 40 (!) stories are written and drawn by David, with about a dozen of them coming from other artists. There’s no central underlying theme, just a big old pile of stories about all sorts of things. OK fine, his “I Live With a Killer” stories (about how his cat brings him pieces of various animals it’s killed) have a connecting theme, but they’re the exception here. Other highlights include the final thoughts of thelast two survivors from a plane crash, our first encounter with aliens, petty space station revenge, the man who’s always falling in love, the story and fate of Dolly the cloned sheep, a story of a missile attack (written by his son I think?), the concept of putting people in concerts who just want to talk for the whole show in their own section, exactly how much of your life you waste on vacuuming, skipping an internet video only to see it on the actual news later, a comic about making a comic that sort of eats itself (drawn by Zu Dominiak), the story a mouse brings back home after nearly being eaten, the robot and the monster, and the inner lives of a couple of flies. That’s what, not even half of the stories here? It’s another pretty fantastic bunch of stories from David, and if you’ve somehow gotten this far in life without seeing his work this is a solid chunk of comics to start with. No price listed, so I’m going to guess the arbitrary number of $10. Contact David and I’m sure he can set you straight…"

A round up of what I've been up to this past year...

In January, I finished my comic story, Nando. The process of making it and other comics projects is explained at my Comics MLitt blog.

Dundee Shmundee! 5 went online at the Dundee Comics Creative Space website here.

I had a cartoon published in US zine Copy This #35.

In February That Comic Smell podcast tackled politics.

I took part in Hourly Comics Day.

I wrote and drew a comic called George vs Herbert for Time & Space.

I then did readings of this and a comic on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album at the launch of Time & Space.

I did a story called Making of Space Film 7 for Star Jaws #15.

That Comic Smell then did an episode on science.

In March, Dundee Shmundee! 6 was published at the DCCS website.

I was a guest in the Covers Album article series for Broken Frontier.

I did a comic called Patriotism for Reworking Walter Scott.

And Dundee Shmundee! 7 appeared at the DCCS website.

In April, I did three stories Revenge on the Orbiting Space Pod, I Live with a Killer 3, and In Concert, for Treehouse #10.

Not comics really, but in May, I did a design as part of the Universty of Dundee 50th anniversary mural.

That Comic Smell had 3 episodes in June; the topics being Vertigo, Justice League, and “Comics with Meaning”.

In July I did a story called Endless Love for Love Bites #1.

In August, I wrote an article on the book, Wonderfully Wordless, for Reference Reviews.

That Comic Smell talked about Image Comics.

It was Jack Kirby's 100th birthday! In honour of the great comics creator, I did a massive painting.

That Comic Smell discussed Valerian, and then then two episodes on Kirby: one, two.

In September, I made a new comic to perform with The Scottish Ensemble for DeeCAP. It was called Orchestras.

Big Brown Eyes: Habitat published my comic Homeless.

I did a story called Robot // Monster for Love Bites #2.

I was interviewed by Gary Watson at Comics Anonymous.

In October, I did a 24 page comic called Dog Walker for 24 Hour Comics Day.

I did a photoshoot and put together a Foto Romance strip for Wilma!, written by Alexandra Craven.

In November, I bade Goodbye, Star Wars for the final issue of Star Jaws #23.

Dundee Shmundee! #8 was published at the DCCS website.

I guested on the Treehouse Comics podcast #7.1, discussing The Lakes Comics Festival and Stan Sakai.

I was also guest on The Beans podcast.

I was Dundee Comics Prize 2017 runner-up for a story on Gulliver's Travels, published in the Swift at 350 comic.

Dundee Shmundee! #9 appeared at the DCCS website.

In December, That Comic Smell did 2 episodes on Avery Hill comics; one, two.

I was on the second Treehouse Comics podcast on the Lakes Comics Festival and Sergio Aragones.

I also continued work on my webcomic Bell Time (Up to episode 33 completed as I speak).

Over the summer I worked on various comics for the MLitt course assignments, including a 24 page Dundee Comics Comic.

And I continued my Star Wars comic panels blog.
