TAY BRIDGE DISASTER COMIC photos and inks

I travelled over to Wormit this morning to take photos of the Tay Bridge, specifically looking to get pictures which included the stumps of the old collapsed bridge.

When I got back I pencilled the third and final panel, and then inked all of it.

I like the line drawings of the crash panel. I scanned that drawing and might do something with it. I'll be adding the watercolour black and white tones to the whole thing tomorrow.

LIGET #3

This is Marc Casilli's latest issue of Liget, published by Incompleta.

One of the stories inside is a variation on the Harvey Pekar name story. This one is a kind of Marc Casilli face story, in which he discusses all the people and characters he's been compared to.

For the front cover, Marc has lots of these character faces in a Guess Who? style game.

On the back, he's asked different artists to draw pictures of his actual face, including Dominic Archer, Edson Bortolotte, Paula Cruz, Livia Fuhrmann, Joao B. Godoi, Debora Kamogawa, Kaina Lacerda, Mayara Lista, Isabelle Ribeiro, Hendric Sueit, and Gary Walsh.

I drew one too. It's in the middle at the front.

More details on Marc's comics can be found here.

THAT COMIC SMELL: You Make Comics?!

The new episode is online now.

From the web:

"This time we take a look just outside the world of comics to find those writers, artists etc that have made comics but are very much known for other things. We find famous authors, actors, chefs, scientists, wrestlers, musicians and many more, all dipped and continue to dip their toes into the wonderful world of comics. There are some huge names and some real surprises during this topic.

WE'VE COME A LONG WAY! layouts, draft 2, pg1

A second pass at the script today, this time stretching it out over two pages.

It gave me more room to move. The main addition was a bigger picture of the fish like creature moving out of panel 2, overlapping into the other panels.

WE'VE COME A LONG WAY! layouts

Here are layouts for a story I'm drawing from a script by Mike Sedakat.

It has seven panels over the page, so it was a bit busy but was working out okay, until panels six and seven. Here the text became just too much to fit in, even after a few attempts which got panel seven to work. Six became pure text!

I asked Mike if he could cut down the text in these panels at all, and he suggested making it a two pager instead. So I will have another crack at laying it out tomorrow.

NOBODY colours

Today was spent doing colours for the story I'm drawing which was written by Tom Stewart.

I decided to go digital with this one as I wanted the solid blocks of colour behind the character.

I was also replicating a comic cover, and the digital colour works better for that than paint.

The new episode is online now.

From the website:

"Just a nice short one today for everybody. We do a spotlight on Dark Horse Comics. A company that has always been consistent In getting out comics. So much so that they often are forgotten. We delve into some of their back catalogue, a little on the not so pleasant side and discuss where we know them from mainly. All in all it’s great to focus on a publisher that isn’t the usual big two.

SARARARARA colours

I spent yesterday colouring the page only to have the file get corrupted just as I finished.

So today it was time to do it all again. An exercise in not going bonkers.

Above is a clip featuring Sarararara and Danny Zuko from Grease.

I'm experimenting with not having panel borders for this story.

STAR JAWS #37 - MOUNT A RESCUE pull out section

The new issue of Star Jaws is out now from Barnstormer Comics.

Inside is work from Robin Barnard, Martin Hand, and Paul B. Rainey.

In the middle is a "Star Jaws previews pull-out" dedicated to Mount a Rescue.

It's great to see this! It reminds me of comics pull out sections Marvel UK used to do.

Many thanks to Robin for having this in Star Jaws. More info on Barnstormer Comics can be found here.
